Democracy Died Today

A Poem From The Pink Compendium:

Democracy died today

We want to give freedom to others
yet people are still enslaved here
the binds may not be around our ankles
but they are still there... on our minds.

Democracy died today.

Millions went to the polls
waited hours upon hours to vote
in the sun, the rain
still to be disenfranchised.

Democracy died today.

Did the solider in Iraq have his ballot counted
Or the citizens working in Afghanistan
Why are the Iraqis laughing about
our version of democracy when

Democracy died today.

Blackwell choked the system
so that his boy could win
Kerry conceded the election
so that his brother could win.

Democracy died today.

I'm looking at a map
Not every state is filled in
Does this mean we gave up too soon
Or did we just give up because we knew

Democracy died today.

Freedom of expression
Freedom of religion
Freedom to live our lives as we see fit
Now all floating in the wind as

Democracy died today.

A country divided on every issue
Hate and prejudice coming to the surface
Bubbling up like lava
It will soon overflow and destroy because

Democracy died today.
