The Real Stealing Of Christmas
As the religious right spews ridiculous rhetoric about Christmas somehow being stolen or supressed, lets take a look at Iraq, where after years of practicing their faith in relative peace, our invasion has cost Christians their safety and their ability to celebrate Christmas the way they previously had.
"For Iraqi Christians, it will be a gloomy Christmas.
Saddam Hussein's secular regime did not persecute the Christian community, though his government did give rough treatment to some other religious and ethnic groups. But since the U.S. occupation of Iraq last year, radical militants have regularly attacked churches.
As a result, Iraq's community of 700,000 Christians have called off celebrations this year.
Churches have announced that the traditional Christmas Eve Mass will be canceled and replaced by brief early morning prayers. Churches also have called off receptions for parishioners. "
So while the likes of Jerry Falwell and Bill O'Reilly are whinning because shopping malls have signs that say Happy Holidays instead of Merry Christmas, Iraqi Christians really cannot celebrate Christmas because they are in fear of their churches being bombed. Can we work on some real problems in America?
